Globe Telecom is extending its Starlink Mobile satellite-to-mobile service to Filipino customers traveling to Japan, allowing eligible users to stay connected in areas without conventional cellular coverage.
The service is being offered through Globe’s partnership with KDDI Japan, following the commercial launch of Starlink Mobile for Globe and TM customers in the Philippines.
Under the arrangement, compatible Globe customers in Japan can use Starlink Mobile to send satellite-enabled messages and access select applications for messaging, navigation and other communications in areas where terrestrial mobile networks are unavailable or limited.
The service is integrated with Globe’s GoRoam Japan roaming offerings, allowing customers to switch between conventional cellular roaming and satellite connectivity as they move between areas with and without mobile coverage.
“Globe has always been at the forefront of connectivity innovation, and extending our Starlink journey into international access is the next step in that evolution,” said Eric Tanbauco, head of Globe’s Consumer Mobile Business.
“Through our partnership with KDDI, we are exploring how satellite-enabled connectivity can help overcome network boundaries and create a more seamless travel experience for customers,” Tanbauco added.
The move follows KDDI’s announcement that its customers traveling to the Philippines can use Globe’s Starlink Mobile service.
“Our goal is to eliminate global cellular dead zones and deliver reliable connectivity, aiming for a world where if you can see the sky, you can connect anywhere,” said Makoto Kadowaki, executive officer at KDDI Japan.
“Through our partnership with Globe and Starlink Mobile, we are taking another step toward expanding satellite-enabled roaming beyond traditional coverage areas,” Kadowaki added.
Starlink Mobile uses direct-to-device satellite connectivity, allowing compatible phones to connect directly to satellites without a separate satellite terminal or dedicated hardware. The service is distinct from Starlink’s fixed or mobile broadband internet offerings.
For use in Japan, Globe customers need a compatible LTE or 5G Android or HarmonyOS device, an applicable GoRoam Japan promo, mobile data and data roaming enabled, and a clear, unobstructed view of the sky for optimal satellite connectivity.
Globe said its GoRoam Japan offers are available through the GlobeOne app and GCash. Plans start at P400 for seven days, including 2GB of all-access data, 1GB of satellite data and 50 satellite text messages to all networks.
The Globe-KDDI arrangement expands the use of satellite-to-mobile technology beyond domestic coverage, providing an additional connectivity option for Filipino travelers in areas where conventional cellular networks are unavailable.
