Smart Communications is cutting prices on its travel eSIM data packs ahead of the year-end travel rush.
Through the Smart Travē app, the 3GB pack, valid for 15 days, now costs US$5.75, down from US$10. The 30-day 10GB pack drops to US$12 from US$20. A seven-day 1GB pack for light use is US$3, down from US$4.50 according to Smart’s promotional graphic. The 3GB discount works out to about 43%, the 10GB discount to 40% and the 1GB discount to about 33%.
Smart Travē covers more than 100 destinations and is available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Users pick a destination, buy a pack in the app and activate the eSIM on a compatible phone, with no physical SIM needed.
The local-support angle
Travel eSIMs from global apps are already common. Smart’s pitch is that Travē users can call the Smart hotline for help while abroad, something generic eSIM providers do not offer Filipino customers.
“Smart’s commitment goes beyond keeping Filipinos connected wherever they are in the Philippines,” said Lloyd R. Manaloto, First Vice President and OIC for Smart.
Albert V. Villa-Real, President and CEO of PLDT Global Corporation and Head of PLDT and Smart International Business, said the goal is to let travelers “worry less about connectivity and focus on enjoying the journey.”
What travelers should check
An eSIM only works if the phone supports it and is not locked to a carrier. Travelers should confirm compatibility before buying a pack and compare the price per gigabyte against their home postpaid or prepaid roaming offers. Smart did not say how long the promotional rates will run.
